Well ... a 'promotional image' of TW has surfaced, over on SFX (I haven't read the interview because it's with RTD, and I'll probably just get angry).

So ... erm ... yeah?

WHUT DA FECK?

Composition with only two subjects has to be of the same 'status', otherwise the picture leans. See how the skyscrapers they tried to balance it out with LEAN because the right side of the image is taken up by SMALL Jack since there isn't enough room for him next to DOMINANT Gwen. Maybe the skyscraper will fall on him and bury him for a billion years so that he can't interfere with Gwenwood.

Why did I promise myself I'd watch the first few episodes of this? I hope to GOD some kind of MIRACLE happens and something DECENT is produced, because I won't be able to get those hours of my life back.

EDIT: At least I got my new series of 'Animals at Work', and I have to say there's far more interesting drama in chicken-guarding alpacas than in RTD's left horn!

Maybe Jack will only be in a couple episodes just to get the series started. Then he'll go back to Doctor Who. WOuldn't that be great? Then we could all ignore Gwenwood and just watch Doctor Who.

Well ... Moffat did say he'd love to have Jack back ...

God, I hope so.

Moffat said he'd love to have Jack back?

Moffat said he'd love to have Jack back? When? Where? Oh, that would be the best news. I like Jack so much better on Doctor Who! He's not as broken there. (He's a bit broken on The Stolen Earth but other than that he's not.)

Actually, this is making me feel real good about my promise not to watch a minute of this tripe.

Add this to the news that RTD continues to worship at the altar of "Calling it 'Dark' Frees Me to be Arbitrary and Capricious in Plotting," and its a no brainer for me.

If there's an audience out there for this, I wish them all many happy years together. Clearly, the Torchwood I fell in love with is not coming back.

Yes, don't read the interview. I'm ranting now.
Yes, I know I'm being a hysterical fangirl. No, I don't give a flying fuck.
I'm going to watch Season One And Two now and cry.

ITS NOT AN OFFICIAL PROMO OF THE NEW SERIES.

Its a photoshop SFX did for the cover from previous season promo shots. Everyone is getting themselves all worked up over this and it means nothing.

They are shots from the season 3 promos. I can't find the one of Gwen (but I've seen it before), but here is the Jack one.

The reason I knew it was a mash-up was solely because I recalled the horrible, horrible hairdon't Barrowman's sporting in that promo pic.

...that kinds of horror ingrates itself into one's very psyche.

Not official?

It is't an official promo? So that means Torchwood won't be set in Detroit. That's comforting. ;-)

Seriously, I heard that there a picture like this in the Torchwood Magazine too, so even if it's not a new shoot it seems pretty official. I might be missing something though - would it have to be a new shoot to be considered official?

Yeah, but the interview's pretty real, isn't it? Either way, they've made it quite clear that it won't be in Cardiff anymore and that's what upsets me the most (besides the Gwen).

however, if it is genuine, then it kind of sucks. i mean, they've got gwen in front and jack at the back looking small as you say which again suggests gwen is the most important figure and jack's just kind of...there. if it were a genuine s4 pic, they should've done something like gwen and jack back to back to show that they're equal:P still, im staying well away from all series 4 talk/ articles/lies./ whatever, afterall, owen, tosh and ianto are still alive *skips back to denilasville*

Well if you remember all the promotional material for CoE had Gwen in the center front where as in Series 1 and 2, Jack was front and center. I had a feeling then and there that Gwen would be the dominate character in CoE of the original cast and it was so.

If Gwen and Jack were to be equal characters in this S4, they should have been at least side by side. But with Gwen photo shopped to the front, I know where RTD's main emphasis will lie.

Alpacas are bloody strange looking creatures. Is it a llama? A camel? A camellama? Intelligent buggers, mind.

The picture might not be a genuine promo, but every interview RTD has given since the end of Children of Earth suggests all too strongly that what the suggestion of “Gwenwood” is not all that inaccurate. Both RTD and Eve Myles have been recorded in interviews as saying things that suggest Torchwood is going to revolve primarily around Gwen, and that Jack will be there as (pardon the expression) eye candy to try and hold on to loyal viewers.

It can be argued that the picture is just a magazine mock-up, but I’m tipping that it’s a perfect pictorial representation of how RTD views the new Torchwood.
Seriously, why doesn’t he just declare Torchwood dead and buried, and rename it Excalibur? After all, isn’t that what he’s wanted all along?

Date: 2010-07-27 07:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] woani21.livejournal.com
This is just God awful. Even if this is technically only a reformatting of promotional photography, it is reformatting done by a professional, presumably viable and truthful, source, which very well may have altered the photos in line with what information the interviewer gleaned from RTD. This whole show is just so over that I'm amazed that there is still any sort of a fandom, even if the fandom that is left is the most divided and disappointed that even experienced fandomers have ever seen.

Personally, I feel that Torchwood is merely a name being used by RTD to ensure that he could make his attempt at success in the States. Any relationship to Doctor Who, Wales, or even the past three seasons of Torchwood will be downplayed as much as possible, as will the sci-fi basis for the program. If this weren't the case, then why would there be CIA agents in the main cast, when in the Who-dom it was always Unit that took over in alien-related cases. The answer is simple: There will be no reference to Unit or anything that have ever done. We'll probably get some ridiculous, even by the standards of sci-fi, explanation for why CIA agents involved in an inexplicable investigation must turn to the sole living agent of a defunct British organization they are told should be brought in on the case. Cue Super!Gwen! And to be perfectly blunt, has anyone started taking bets on whether she'll end up between the sheets with the proposed Owen 2.0? Since Rhys probably won't be able to understand her challenging new job fighting aliens, or whatever replaces them in America.

You don't think she'll end up with Jack? I'm still thinking Rhys will be killed. I had expected it to happen off-screen, between CoE and S4, but now, given the whole "dark" thing, I'm thinking Rhys'll be horribly and graphically killed by aliens.

Jack will come back to earth when he hears about Rhys's untimely demise, to help Gwen. They'll be united by their shared pain... (gagging yet?) Because Jack's so broken, and she's Super!Gwen, she'll be both Torchwood's leader and Jack's healer. You know, like Rose healed Nine. (Wouldn't want to have to think up a whole new character development sequence now, would we?)

The Gwack scenario could definitely play out. Every time I think of it, I vomit a little bit in my mouth, so I avoid doing so whenever possible.

I think it is possible for Gwen to also pursue an affair while Rhys is stuck at home taking care of the baby (if either of them is actually featured in the series)or dead, basically because I fully expect for us to be promised a reboot, and then see the series redo much of what we saw in season 1 to "re-establish" the characters, only mixed in with the CIA and influential pedophile criminals/stars. I would say "brilliant stuff," but I've never managed to translate sarcastic intonations unto the Internet, so I won't do it.

Date: 2010-07-28 01:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bettathnbarbie.livejournal.com
Agree completely on Gwack. Maybe an affair would be better because it would at least leave Jack free of her.

Then again, if she had an affair she would no longer be the icon of family values and heterosexuality that she was in CoE. Who would bring light into Torchwood's darkness then? (I can't help it, the subject tweeks my sarcastic bone; even if sarcasm doesn't translate well into the Internet, S4 news like this compels me to try. Sorry!)

Honestly the depiction of Gwen as a family-oriented or maternal figure would be a major change to the character. They have continually sent signals up that show her reticence towards settling down, getting married, and even her threatening to Rhys that she'll abort her baby in CoE have indicated that it's likely just not in her to do those things. Of course some people don't express a desire for domestic life and then adapt very well, but it would seem in character to show Gwen trying to escape from the domestic "mess" that she'd created for herself, probably with some idiotic analogy comparing her to a wild horse running free across the American plains.

OMG, that's a wonderful[ly horribly twisted] analogy. Think of the one-liners it opens up for Jack! ;)

WTF, the affair with Owen was apparently justifiable for Saint Gwen because Rhys wasn't good in bed... as lame excuses go, I suppose needing to run free isn't any worse.

WTF? Are people actually citing that as an excuse? Seriously?
IMO, Gwen shagged Owen because she could. All her 'needing somebody to talk to' was just so much bullshit to salve her own conscience. If she hadn't joined Torchwood, she would have probably ended up shagging Andy the first time she'd had a 'bad day'.

Don't remember where I saw it. Hopefully it wasn't said ironically and I remember it as serious. That would be embarrassing; I hate to think I'm that humorless.

I believe that Julie Gardner said that during one of the question-and-answer sessions at one of the cons where she attended. I'm not claiming certainty on that, but I believe a question was raised regarding Gwen, Owen, and Rhys and the reasoning given by Gardner was that Gwen turned to Owen because no one outside of Torchwood could understand or comfort her. I don't get it, but there is no point arguing with a Torchwood producer about why Gwen does anything.
Has anyone else seen the new SFX interview where RTD says that Torchwood is in fact over, but that the name is being kept for the reboot on Starz? At least it has been admitted now.

Can you give us a link? I haven't seen that article, but I'd like to read it.

And yes, you're right. No use arguing why any of the characters do anything. They have characters do all kinds of stupid things with little or no justification (going into a room with a tank full of poisonous gas, and trying to shoot it open without wearing protective gear comes to mind). Whatever they say, real answer seems to be, "Because we felt like it."

Saying article was inaccurate on my part, because if I remember correctly it was actually during a videotaped Comic-Con panel that was put on Youtube. It was one that I believe took place after season 2 wrapped up, since there was some pseudo-sad line about missing Tosh and Owen and how emotional everyone on the cast was about it. I no longer have the specific link, in truth I now avoid watching any panel videos, but hopefully someone here will recognize the video that I'm talking about.
