OKays ... so believe it or not, Silver Service is nearly finished, leaving room on my timetable for a possible new fic. The only problem is ... I've kinda got too many bunnies. So, what I'm going to do is write a short 'pilot' section for each one, then link them together and have you all read them and tell me which one you'd be most interested in seeing.

To start off, I bring yee the possible opening for [working title] 'Out of Time'. It begins pre-series 2, and kinds flies off from there.

Waking up in morning was always the hardest bit, because usually, when Ianto Jones woke up, he didn't remember. He'd lie there, cocooned in the warmth of thick, fluffy duvets in his darkened bedroom, feeling for the heat radiating from the section of bed beside him and smiling to himself in that contented way that made him feel like for once, it might be a good day.

But then he would roll over, and see the sunlight crack through the curtains of his bedroom window, splashing across his bed to the empty space where Jack used to lie.

And then he'd remember.

Jack was gone. Jack had left.

The heat Ianto felt was from the electric blanket he'd bought, desperate to keep the illusion of Jack having been in his bed a little longer. His thick, fluffy duvets were the ones Jack had insisted he bought when his boiler had broken down. The curtains didn't close all the way because Jack had insisted on taking the measurements, only to remember later that no one used the imperial system anymore. Instead of re-measuring, he had depended on his own abilities with conversion and mathematics, coming up two centimeters too short even with the curtains stretched across the rail.

Sitting up, he felt that weight settling in his chest that he always seemed to feel these days. Frowning, he listened carefully. Was the shower running?

His eyes flicked around the room.

Pale blue shirt, dress trousers and white t-shirt neatly folded, braces wound up on top, on the chair by the laundry basket. Combat boots by the foot of the bed. Thick wool with brass buttons clutched tightly in his hand, the material winding between his thighs ....

Jack had come back.

Jack had come back to him.

Jack had come back for him.

The shower switched off, and Ianto raised his head to see the Captain, towel around his waist and damp hair sticking out at all angles. They smiled at each other.

"Okay?" Jack asked.

Ianto nodded, then cleared his throat. "You're ... leaving?" he asked tentatively.

"I have to." Jack reminded him, though he sounded pained and bitter.

"When are you getting back? Or will I just see you at ....?"

"I'll be back as soon as I can." smiled Jack, towel drying his hair quickly before slowly beginning to pull on his clothes.

"I still have some of your things in the wardrobe." Ianto told him, making to get up.

"It's okay. I'll just stick with these."

Ianto stayed sat on the bed, his hands still clutching Jack's greatcoat, watching the man himself pulling his boots on and carefully lacing them up.

"You sure you have to go right now? I don't mind you staying a little longer."

"If I don't go now, I'll forget to leave." Jack replied, putting his watch on his wrist and fiddling with the buckle, his voice cracking slightly.

Ianto stared down at his hands, running a finger around one of the buttons, trying to commit the details to memory. He ran the material through his hands properly, frowning at the stiffness and seeing, in the spilled splashes of sunlight, that it was slightly different in colour than when it had last been in his care.

"You got a new coat?" he frowned.

Jack walked over to him, his sadness etched into his face.

"Why do you have a new coat?" Ianto asked, suddenly feeling like there was an impostor in his hands, like he'd lost something. It looked like Jack's coat, it smelt like Jack's coat, it felt like Jack's coat ... but now Ianto could see that this was different. "What happened to your old one?"

"Accident with an explosive." Jack told him, taking the material from him and holding it up as if to inspect it in the light. He wrapped it around itself into a bundle in his arms, and pressed his lips together. "I should go now."

He sat heavily on the bed beside Ianto, putting an arm around his bare shoulders and pulling him close, tucking dark head under his chin and inhaling the scent of his hair. Arms snaked around him in turn, and they held each other for a long moment, tight and safe. Jack kissed Ianto's head, then tried to get up, laughing a little when Ianto refused to let go and pulled him back down.

Jack tried not to kiss him, knowing once he did he would be lost again, but Ianto had always had such a perfect mouth, such a perfect technique ... such safe arms. Ianto closed the distance, their lips touching, their tongues meeting and Ianto could hardly breathe as Jack kissed him back, passionately, gently and filled with such a strong sense of longing.

All Jack wanted was to have him again. He wanted to see him sweat and writhe beneath him one more time, to moan and sigh and to let out those little cries and whimpers that made Jack feel victorious for drawing out. Tousled hair, legs wrapped around his waist, begging for more, wanting him deeper.

He could feel his clothes becoming too tight and constricted, his cotton-covered limbs entangled with Ianto's still-naked body.

Maybe he could stay a little longer ....

His watch started beeping angrily, making them both jump and break apart.

With a slight laugh, Jack touched their foreheads together and inhaled deeply. "I have to go."

"I don't want you to."

"I have to. My time's up."

"He has a time machine. I'm sure he can wait."

"I'll be back. I promise."

"When?"

"He has a time machine. So ... whenever, really."

"Why won't you stay longer?"

"There's only so much I can do, Ianto, without ... without changing anything. And the longer I stay, the more chance there is I'll say or do something that will mess up the future."

Ianto nodded slowly, almost imperceptibly, and Jack heaved himself up from the bed, keeping his fingers brushing Ianto's hair for as long as possible before beginning to walk away. He got to the bedroom door and hesitated, turning back and biting his lip. Ianto watched him and he watched Ianto.

Jack glanced away, then raised his left arm, opening his wrist-strap and pressing some buttons. He watched it intently, then snapped it shut again.

Purposefully, he strode back over to Ianto, taking his shoulders in a firm grip. "If we move quick ... there's a freighter cruising just on the edge of the galaxy."

Ianto blinked. "I ... I don't understand."

"All it'll take is one signal ..." He indicated his Vortex Manipulator. "... and they'll take us away."

"You ... you ... the Doctor? What about the Doctor?"

"We have to go now, so he won't find us if he comes looking."

"Run away?" realised Ianto. "You ... you want us to run away ... buh ... the timelines?"

"Fuck the timelines, Ianto! We're changing them. We'll be penniless and living off the freighter and we won't have much but ... we'll have each other again. " Jack grinned, going over to Ianto's wardrobe and pulling a suitcase out of the bottom.

"But what about the paradox ...." Ianto mumbled. He decided not to voice his objections about being penniless by choice.

"The TARDIS will hold it in place for us - I know she will."

"Jack!"

"What?" Jack asked, exasperated, mid-way through starting to pack Ianto's suits and shirts.

"We can't ... what ... things will change! We can't know how anything will turn out!"

"That's what's so exciting about the future. You can't ever know it - not for certain. Look ... we'll send back instructions to my past self when he returns from the Valiant."

"Valiant?" blinked Ianto. "What were you doing on the Valiant?"

"Doesn't matter - grab a suitcase."

"Aren't you going to stop and ask me whether or not I want to run away?" Ianto pointed out, eyebrow raised, pulling his duvets around him in his protective cocoon.

Jack froze, then turned. "Ianto ... this ... this will be the ... the best thing that will ever happen for us. I swear. Please - come with me."

Ianto bit his lip.

He thought about it. About the recklessness of it, and of the desperation leaking through Jack's movements as he shoved clothes, shoes and photographs into the suitcase.

Ianto pushed back the covers.

"You should put the suits in first, then the shirts." he said, moving towards the wardrobe to get something to wear. "And shoes on top. I'll get us some food."

Jack grinned at him, looking as though tears were about to well up in his eyes, turning away and fiddling with his Manipulator while Ianto dressed quickly, pulled out a rucksack and left to get food and drink.

Jack took a deep, calming breath, composing in his head the instructions they would beam to the planet when his current self returned. Hopefully that would be enough not to create too big a paradox.

The suitcase was stuffed full when Ianto returned, and he helped Jack fill the smaller one with the things he'd left at Ianto's house. Ianto scribbled a quick note to Tosh, Owen, Gwen and Myfanwy to tell them he had left, and that he would contact his sister himself. How, he wasn't quite sure yet.

Jack helped him into his coat, pulled him close and kissed him again. "This is ... I can't believe ... I ... you and me ... together again ...."

"I thought you were in a rush." Ianto reminded him, wary of the blue box still parked outside.

"Yeah ... yeah ...." Jack nodded, still grinning. He hefted the rucksack of supplies onto his back and took the handle of the suitcase while Ianto tried to style his tousled hair into something more presentable. Once neat and tidy, Jack fiddled with the manipulator then clasped Ianto's hand. "Ready?"

"Ha!" Ianto practically shrieked. "Not really!"

might possibly TBC ....

Oooo I like this. Yay for Jack ignoring the consequences and stealing Ianto away! It makes me happy/sad, sooo...: ^.^ + ;_; = ^_; ? Per usual, your writing is waaaay hotter than it has any right being, especially considering all they did was bloody *kiss*.
Waiting eagerly to see some of the other ones you've cooked up.

Interesting. I'm guessing if jack left the doctor on the Valiant there could be some serious consequences of not going back. But if Jack and Ianto are going to run off and have adventures, I'm always going to be ready to go along.

'Specially with you writing it.

Next option?

Ooo intriguing! I love Jack's "fuck the timelines!" attitude. I have to admit, the first couple lines broke my heart, but Jack was really there! Albeit, if I'm reading correctly, future!Jack, but still.

Good start! Eagerly awaiting the next pilot! Or more of this. One or the other :)

OOoo!!! You come up with some of the most interesting ideas and execute them so fabulously!!!

I'm guessing this is post-COE and Jack went back just to see Ianto? Love Jack's attitude and wanting to be with Ianto no matter where they are, when they are, or what they have. :) Definitely wouldn't complain to seeing more of this. ;)

This is very interesting. I wonder how much Jack will be able to tell Ianto and what he'll keep secret, and how that will effect them as they go along, and what the results of Jack's actions will be.

i'd say this is definitely a good option, though as always i'm intrigued about what else is floating about in your head. i would love to know what time this jack is from, and if he knows about what happens with the 456 and that's why he's so desperate to get ianto away... but the relationship they have is just so sweet, of course that will be tested when they are together 24 hours a day (or however many hours there are in a day where they end up), and ianto is having to depend on jack, and there are just so many things to explore!

I'd love to read more, but if forced to pick, I'd lean towards #2.

Though I should add that now I realize why I'd missed this one: the phrasing of the cut-text kind of bothered me.
