New babies get dual language books when they're born. Which is wonderful, if either parent speaks Welsh!

My friend is Welsh, but never learnt as a child. She's having to learn some Welsh so she can support her child once he's in school.

Her husband is part of the Heddlu in Newport and doesn't know any at all.

Very funny. It reminds me that one of the opportunities lost by Wales' own RTD, is to share with folks - especially the geography and culture challenged over here - a little insight into Wales.

I can't recall anyone speaking Welsh in the show until Andy welcomes Gwen home in Ep 5 of CoE.

Rhys did say "spag bol" and I had to look it up, but it turned out to be just bastardized italian/english.

They don't seem to eat anything Welsh, celebrate any Welsh holidays or traditions. Seriously, you could move the whole rift to Reykjavik and the story wouldn't be much different.

Gareth, Kai, Tom and Eve are all Welsh, right? But their accents are different. And Gareth's is much more Welsh in early series 1 than it became later on. Accents can lead to mistaken stereotypes but they also convey a lot of information. We get none of that. Think of the many accents in England and what they tell you about where a person is from. It's not a complete character portrait, but it does offer insights.

I'm sure that would have been obvious to a writer half as clever as he thought he was.

(OK. It's now official. I can rant and rave on any topic.) *slinks back into chair*
