Rhiannon was still staring at him. She was just sat on the couch, holding her cold cup of tea, staring at him. Her mouth was half open, still in shock.

“You don’t work for the Tourist Board?” she repeated.

“No, Rhiannon. I work for a secret organisation. The shop upstairs isn’t real. It ... conceals an entrance.”

An entrance?”

“You found the other one.” Ianto told her. Jack had made himself scarce while Ianto calmed his sister down, deciding that right now paperwork looked far more enticing than the traumatised woman on the sofa.

“So ... Jack’s like ... Jack’s like ... a spy? Like James Bond?” she stammered.

“No. He’s ... more ... Captain Scarlet or International Rescue. But more Cardiff based.”

She mouthed an ‘oh’. “So ... why ... why Cardiff?”

“There’s a Rift in Space and Time that runs right through the centre of the city. Sometimes stuff falls through and it’s our job to monitor it.” Ianto reeled off the well-used explanation.

“A Rift in ... what the fuck? Have you gone mad? Space and Time? There’s a big hole in Space and Time floating over Cardiff?”

“I haven’t gone mad ... though working here has definitely brought me close to insanity ... anyway ... look, Rhiannon. I work here – with Jack – and we ... keep the city safe. That stuff you heard about Jack being bad ... he’s not. Torchwood’s not. We’re not. We work for the Crown, to protect Britain from alien threats.”

“Aliens?”

“Aliens.”

“That’s it ... joke over. I want to go home.”

Ianto sighed, rubbing his brow with his fingers. “Just ... drink your tea, Rhiannon.”

“It’s cold.” she whispered. “Ianto ... what ... what are you doing here? What’s going on?”

“I’ve told you, Rhi.” he said, putting his arm around her. “This is where I work. We’re a secret organisation. We catch aliens and monitor the Rift.”

“I you catch aliens ... then I’d be able to see one, then?” she said, slight challenge in her voice.

Ianto took a deep breath. “Okay.” he rose to his feet, pulling Rhiannon up after him. “Jack? I’m taking Rhiannon to see Janet.”

Jack raised his head from his paperwork. “Then I’m coming too.” He got up, putting the lid back on his pen, and followed them.

They travelled down a dark corridor, branching off into a tunnel and then left down some stairs. Jack took the lead, and heaved open a big, heavy iron door and stepped inside, waiting for them to follow. He indicated towards one of the cells with his head, and Rhiannon looked.

Her eyes widened in shock and fear, squeaking in terror. She turned as if to run, but Ianto held her firmly in place.

“This is Janet.” said Jack, moving close to the plexi-glass that separated the creature from the three humans. “She’s our long-term Resident Weevil.”

“Wuh – wuh – Weevil?” stammered Rhiannon, staring at the thing in the boiler suit.

“They live in the sewers.”

“Jack! Don’t tell her that!” snapped Ianto. Rhiannon was still clinging to him, but slowly her iron grip was relenting. Jack shrugged at him.

“Do they ... d ... do they eat people?” Rhiannon swallowed, taking a tentative step towards the clear barrier. The Weevil was eying her, inspecting her, it seemed. It drew back its lips and revealed yellow shark-like fangs, hissing. Ianto took a step forward towards the plexi-glass. Its eyes were drawn to the movement. As if she recognised him, she fell quiet. A keening noise echoed through its throat and it sniffed at the holes in the cell to sniff at Ianto's body.

“She thinks I’m here to feed her.” said Ianto, frowning. “I refuse to go in there if she hisses at me ... I think she might be learning ...”

“But does it eat people?” pressed Rhiannon.

“Yep.” said Jack flippantly. “All the time. Usually we can catch them before they do any serious damage, but sometimes we’re too late.” he seemed genuinely saddened by that last fact.

“I’m sorry.” said Rhiannon, not sure what else she could really say. Jack shoved his hands in his pockets and quirked an eyebrow, but didn’t reply.

“They eat people ... they live in the sewers ... why haven’t you ... killed them all or something?”

“You mean committed genocide?” Ianto pointed out. “Who are we to decide what races share the planet? Really it’s only the cleverer or more curious ones who figure out how to get to the surface – the rest of the time they live on faeces.”

“Ew.”

“Yeah. Anyway ... I think Janet’s had enough company for this evening. She does tend to get a bit tetchy if you stare at her too long. Tried to eat Owen through the glass, once.”

“Owen? That poor little boy!” exclaimed Rhiannon. “You brought him down here ... how ... why ... what the hell were you thinking?”

“Erm ... we’ll explain that one at a later date, I think ...” Ianto shifted uncomfortably, and to signal the end of that particular discussion began to make his way back to the stairs. Jack and Rhiannon followed.

After introducing her to Myfanwy and giving her a quick tour of the hothouse, Rhiannon was finally demanding they let her go home. “I’ll give you a lift.” Ianto offered. “In the big black Torchwood SUV if you want.”

Rhiannon decided it would probably be a better idea than walking through her estate at eleven o clock at night, and followed Ianto to the garage. She gawped at the cars until Ianto forcefully dragged her into the SUV.

“Ianto!” Jack called. “Quick word?”

Ianto hurried over to him, fully expecting what was about to be asked of him. His suspicions were confirmed when a small white pill was pushed into his hand.

“You have to Retcon her.”

“We didn’t Retcon Rhys.” Ianto pointed out.

“One exception. One and only. Never again. I’m sorry, Ianto, but she can’t remember this.”

“If Gwen didn’t have to do it, neither do I.” he scowled. Jack bit his tongue.

“Fine. I’ll do it then.” he said eventually.

“You bloody won’t!” snapped Ianto. “For the first time, she’s realising that I’m actually doing something with my life! I’m not some prissy little receptionist nobod –”

“You are not nobody, Ianto. If she can’t already see that, it’s her problem.”

“I’m not arguing with you, Jack.”

Jack clamped his mouth shut in frustration. “Okay ... Okay ... I’m sorr –”

The surveillance monitor was blaring. Ianto instinctively dug in his pocket for his PDA, tapping at the screen and bringing up the stats. “Shit. UFO – definitely alien in origin – literally just fallen through the Rift .... zooming all over the place. Look.” Ianto offered him the screen.

“I know that species! If they crash they’ll turn hostile and attack anything living!”

They wordlessly bolted for the SUV, Jack taking the driver’s side and dragging the engine into life. They roared out of the garage, Ianto rolling his eyes at the unnecessary amount of revving, and they tore out into the dark Cardiff streets.

“Erm ... guys ...” said a small voice behind them. They turned.

They’d totally forgotten about Rhiannon.

Ianto's handheld bleeped, distracting him. “Left, Jack! We’re almost on it! – Rhiannon: belt up, shut up and hold on! We don’t have time to throw you out of the car – and with that thing flying round you’re probably safer in here ...” Jack threw the SUV so hard they were temporarily balanced on two wheels. “Remember ..." he added sarcastically. "... I said ‘probably’...”

Something hard and metallic bounced off the bonnet of the car. “Shit! They’re firing on us! Ianto ... you’re gonna have to dri – Ianto!”

Ianto had already wound down the window, producing his semi-automatic and returning fire. He could see the sparks as the bullets hit the craft, two of them finding weak spots that sent electric flecks into the air. He pulled himself back in the car. “Want me to drive?” he offered. Jack was the better shot – and more likely to recover if anything happened while leaning out the window.

It was a tricky manoeuvre. Jack pressed a button that held the SUV’s pedals and steering wheel in place while Ianto clambered over him and Jack scrambled to the passenger side. They got the steering and pedal lock off just in time, narrowly missing a wall.

Jack was checking his gun, making sure it was fully loaded. He stood as tall as he could, half of him leaning out of the window, his feet on the seats. The aliens were firing on them again, their ammunition bouncing off the bonnet leaving dents and scratches. Jack fired all his rounds, electrical sparks flying off the craft in all directions. Spent, Jack lowered himself back into the car.

“Don’t you ever put your feet on the seats like that again! You could have aimed perfectly well from a little lower down!” fumed Ianto. “As if the damage to the bonnet isn’t enough ...” he added in a grumble. Jack was reloading his gun at lightning speed, grunting being his only reply to Ianto's distress. He leaned out the window again, and Rhiannon let out an audible squawk as one of the alien’s bullets hit the windsceen. Ianto jumped slightly when it happened, but maintained as much concentration on tailing the vessel as possible. It was thankfully heading towards more open ground, but that didn’t stop Ianto from groaning at the cover-up that would follow the next day.

The aliens took a sudden, sharp u-turn and Ianto hit the handbrake and skidded the car round in a screech of tires and burning clutch. The SUV hurtled after the craft, and it tried the same trick again. Ianto dragged the car through the 180 degrees turn, drawing the car and the alien ship side by side. They started firing on the Torchwood vehicle again, and Ianto bowed his head forward and wound down the window so that Jack could lean over him and shoot back. He rested across Ianto's shoulders, and he could feel the force and recoil of the gun running through Jack’s arm.

Ianto gasped in pain as an alien bullet pierced his bicep.

“Pull over!” shouted Jack, realising he was injured.

“I’m fine! We’ve got to stop them!”

“I said pull over!”

Ianto hit the brakes, flinging the steering wheel as hard as he could in the direction of the alien’s vessel. The two vehicles collided with a sickening crunch, the front of the SUV taking the brunt of it and throwing the three inside it forward. Rhiannon was protected by her seatbelt, and two large black airbags inflated in the front cushioning Jack and Ianto back into their seats. Jack fumbled blindly, finding the button and deflating them. He clambered out of the car as fast as he could to inspect the other ship. Rhiannon unfastened her seatbelt and leant forward.

“Ianto?” she whispered. "Ianto?"

He groaned, turning his head slightly. "Jack? Where's Jack ...?"

Rhiannon climbed out of the car and ran round to the driver's side. She yanked the door open and saw the extent of the damage the alien ammunition had done. She could hear Jack shouting in the background, his gun fired three times and all was quiet. "Jack!" she shouted. "Jack ... he's ... he's hurt!"

Jack was by her side before she could finish her sentence, forcing her to move out of the way while he inspected Ianto's wound. He sucked air in through his teeth, seeing the blackened and scorched bullet hole, ignoring Ianto's gasp of pain when he pulled back the material of his shirt. The veins and arteries surrounding the gash were turning black, like a web over pure white skin.

"S'not been the best couple of days for me, has it?" Ianto joked, his laugh weak.

The Captain said nothing, drawing his mobile phone out of his pocket and ringing Gwen. "We've got an issue ... look, two dead extra terrestrials - track the SUV. I'm gonna have to carry Ianto back to the Hub. He's wounded. Nah, his sister can help me. I can't afford to waste time waiting for you." He snapped his phone shut, turning to Rhiannon.

She was whimpering, and on the verge of starting to panic. "Rhiannon," said Jack, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Rhiannon: listen to me. He'll be fine. We're going to get him back to the hub - we've got equiptment to deal with this kind of thing - but the last thing that will help him now is you losing your head. I promise that once we get him back to base, you can panic and squeak all you want. Deal?"

She bit her lip. Ianto's head fell forward as his strength ebbed away, the black web slowly but surely spreading down his arm and up his shoulder towards his neck and chest. Rhiannon nodded. "What can I do?"

"I'm gonna carry him. You stay near his head and talk to him. Okay?"

"Okay."

Jack pulled Ianto gently from the car, and Ianto held his arms out in the way he'd been accustomed to over the past couple of days, desperate to be held. The Captain hugged him for a moment, then strengthened his stance and lifted him over his shoulder. Ianto groaned as pain shot through his arm, and his sister instantly started muttering words of reassurance and stroking his hair and brow.

The going was slow - Jack wanted to be careful not to hurt Ianto more than he had to - but eventually they began to near the roads leading to the Plass. Jack had voiced hopes of maybe running into a cab, but none had crossed their paths, and they had to walk all the way to the Plass. Jack took them down the invisible lift, and jumped off it before it managed to get to the ground, causing Ianto to hiss a little. He was close to passing out, Jack knew. The black web was now halfway across his face and creeping further down his chest.

With help from Rhiannon, Jack lay Ianto down on the gurney in Autopsy, unbuttoning his shirt and laying it open. He pulled his arms out of it, and turned to the fridge to begin preparing painkillers and anit-venoms.

"It's a simple poison. It looks and feels worse than it is." Jack explained calmly. "Luckily, it's not too fast acting - it has to spread throughout the circulatory system before it can do any real proper damage. It just hurts like a bitch while it does it."

Ianto murmured his agreement.

Rhiannon ran her fingers through his hair, her face nearly as pale as his. He looked strange with the black lines webbed over his features like a tribal tattoo, his blue eyes a stark contrast to the charcoal lines surrounding them. His lips were turning the sickening colour too, and they were becoming dry and cracked. She tore her eyes away from him to watch Jack administer the first injection, and in moments Ianto visibly relaxed. His grip on the sides of the gurney loosened, and his breathing slowed to a more relaxed pace.

Jack watched him for a couple of moments, then busied himself with bottles of drugs and a saline drip. "Gotta force it out of the system slowly." he explained to Rhiannon. "Too fast and the shock of it could give him a heart attack."

Rhiannon didn't care what Jack did, as long as it worked. She did, however, find his reassurance and smooth confidence with the situation reassuring. "You've come across these kind of ... aliens ... before, then?"

"Not so much the aliens as the weaponry. The weapons weren't theirs - they were stolen, I should think. Forty-ninth century firearms. Human firearms. Humans use these types of guns for thousands of years. Shoot them at a human, it takes hours to kill them. Shoot it at pretty much every other race - dead in minutes."

She was staring at him, probably thinking of thousands of questions, but she asked none. She laced her fingers through Ianto's hair. He was quiet, not saying much, but he was clearly feeling a lot of discomfort. Rolling her eyes, she sighed at him. "Honestly! You never complain d'you? If I were you I'd be yelling like a three year old at play group."

He smiled weakly. "You always act like a three year old at playgroup." he pointed out. He stuck his tongue out at her, and she tried to ignore the fact that it was black.

Jack had finished concocting his medicine, setting up the drip. He was about to puncture the needle into Ianto's arm, when Ianto himself stopped him. "No quip about small pricks? Doctor Harkness ... I'm very very disappointed in you."

Jack smirked. "You won't be saying 'small' when this-"

"OI! Enough of that!" interrupted Rhiannon, blushing a little.

Ianto sniggered, then hissed as the needle found his vein. Jack applied the tape, then attached the tubing of the drip. "You need any more painkillers?" he asked, concerned.

"I don't think so. Don't you need to bandage up my other arm, Doctor?"

"Need to let it bleed a bit, get some of the poison out. I think we'll have to do a transfusion later, when you're feeling a bit better."

"Why didn't you do that to start with?" asked Rhiannon, curious.

"The stuff spreads and clings to all the little tubes inside. That's why they turn black." Jack explained. He stroked the hairs on the back of Ianto's hand. "Are you cold?"

"A little." he replied.

Jack disappeared, then came back with a duvet. He tucked it around Ianto, then stroked his hair. "Thanks. There's some biscuits in the kitchen, I think." said Ianto. "And can I have some milkshake? Oo! And while you're up there, could you give the coffee machine a wipe down? And you need to organise your desk. And there's a roll of binbags in the third drawer down - you wouldn't mind wandering around the hub and picking up all the litter? And washing the mugs? Could you get me a pizza? Meat feast. Oo! Rhiannon, would you like pizza?"

"Ahhh great. You always do this when you're ill ..." groaned Rhiannon.

"Do what?"

"You might not complain, but you sure as hell use your illness as an excuse to boss everybody around ..."

"I'm not being bossy! Jack: tell Rhiannon I'm not being bossy! Jack? Jack? Jack! Where are you going?"

"Biscuits, milkshake, meat feast." Jack called back to him.

"Okay. I'll let you." laughed Ianto.

Silence fell between the siblings for a moment. Rhiannon spoke first. "I ... I'm sorry, Ianto." she whispered.

"Me too." he replied. "You're okay though?"

"Honestly! I'm fine! I think I broke a nail, but at least I didn't get shot by little green men!"

"They were blue, actually." yawned Ianto. "S'all part of the job, though. And at least I'm able to think straight now."

"Can you remember getting from the crash to here?"

"I remember snippets. I remember your voice."

"Do you remember Jack carrying you from there to here?"

Ianto frowned. "A lot of it was black ... I was ... everything was just ... pain. Burning in pain. But ... I remember you talking to me. And I can remember ... I could smell Jack, and I felt safe."

"He ... he must care a lot ... to exhaust himself ... carrying you all that way ..."

"Yeah ... he does." smiled Ianto, reaching out for Rhiannon's hand. She gave it to him, and he squeezed it reassuringly. "He loves me, Rhi."

"Okay ... pizza should be 20 minutes ... shall we get you up to the couch, maybe?" Jack called as he returned.

"Yeah. We can try." said Ianto, trying to sit up and needing Rhiannon to help him back on with his shirt. The black web was already receding slowly, Jack was pleased to see, and he took most of Ianto's weight as he helped him up the stairs as Rhiannon took care of the drip.

Ianto dropped down onto the couch heavily, groaning a little. Jack had brought a couple of syringes with them in case he needed more painkillers, but he insisted he was alright. He kept them close by, anyway. Myfanwy swooped down and landed near the couch, nudging at Ianto with her beak.

"I think she's hungry, Jack. Did you feed her today? Maybe we should let her out."

Jack fiddled with his wrist strap, and moments later Myfanwy was soaring up and out of the hole in the ceiling.

Rhiannon was still refraining from asking questions, filing the most important ones away in her head for a more appropriate time. "Erm ..." she said eventually. "Have you got a bathroom anywhere?"

Jack gave her directions - and the specific instruction not to go wandering anywhere else - and she set off. When she got back, she crept up as close as she could without being seen and watched them for a couple of minutes.

Ianto was leaning on Jack, his head tilted back over his shoulder while Jack stroked his hair and kissed his temple. Their other hands were intertwined on Jack's lap, and as they talked Jack would raise Ianto's hand to his mouth and kiss it. It wasn't until Ianto looked away from Jack's face that the true anxiety of the evening showed on the Captain's features, his eyes seeming darker and his mind racing off into similarly themed thoughts. Ianto was distracted, playing with Jack's hand, and she surreptitiously noticed the way his thumb and forefinger rubbed over the lower bone of Jack's wedding finger. She recognised that subconscious movement. She'd done it herself before and while Alwyn wore a ring there ...

She crept backwards a little, then walked normally so that the two men would hear her return. Sure enough, as she rounded the corner, they were sat pretty much apart again. She settled herself in the gap they'd left between them, and grinned like a schoolgirl in on a big secret.

"What?" frowned Ianto, wincing a little as he accidentally pulled at his drip.

"Nothing." she smirked.

"What?" pressed Ianto.

"I just ... know something you two don't ..." she giggled.

"Just tell us."

"Nope."

"Why?"

"Bic-oh-oz!"

"Y'know ..." said Jack, stroking his chin and giving Ianto a crafty glance. "If we really wanted to know, we could alway-"

"You are not using the Mind Probe on my sister!"

Aw, this is lovely. Finally Rhi is able to see them together in an unguarded moment (ok, so the previous chapters events were fairly unguarded, but you know what I mean!) which shows just how much Jack really cares for Ianto. Gorgeous writing. :)

At least Jack backed down on the retcon. there was no way Ianto was going to be able to handle any more harassment from Rhiannon. Jack's harassment, on the other hand, Ianto's always ready for.

Is Gwen gonna get all huffy about Rhiannon not being retconned? If she is, have Ianto call her a hypocrite. That ought to shut her up pronto.

Hey, at least now, Rhiannon and Rhys can get together and moan about their family members risking their lives on a daily basis. Just don't let Emily (Ianto's mom) know. It would send her to an early grave.

Sooo, is Rhiannon gonna find out about baby!Ianto?

What is it is family of the team finding out about Torchwood and ending up on a mission. lol I'm glad Rhi won't be retconned. She's finally seeing what Jack and Ianto mean to each other.

I love the banner!!! :) Oh I was a bit scared of Rhiannon's reaction but you did an excellent job of having her see Ianto's life and how much they care for each other.

I'm glad that Ianto was adamant that he didn't want to retcon Rhi either. Why should Gwen & Rhys be the only exception? Retconning her doesn't make Ianto's life any easier. She'd still think Jack was bad for him and they would still be at odds. Plus it would have been so sad for him to share all that just for her to accept it and in the end it's erased.

Now that she knows, it brings more because she knows how dangerous his life is and will be worried. At least Jack didn't die, how would they add on explaining that Jack can't die to her!

But just to be safe, Rhi shouldn't drink anything Jack offers her in case he decides to retcon her anyway.

Only Ianto would start a domestic row over car seats whilst battling an alien threat. Or feel the need to correct the colour of said Aliens whilst recovering.
