Okay, I got a lot of Yeses to do this so .... here goes, starting with Book One:
A very brief look at "Another Life" by Peter Anghelides and what I thought about it.
CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THAT THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.
... and I think we all know how I feel about spoilers *folds arms and taps foot*
Another Life
I liked this one, but, like the other two of the first three books, it took forever to read. There's 253 pages and the typeface is tiny, which made it hard to read. After a while my eyes went funny, if I remember correctly.
Anyways - not much Ianto, but he does save the day at the end by nearly killing Owen (sound familiar?) and Tosh falls at his feet as Hero!Ianto. But there's not much of him in there, really. Then again, it's set at the beginning end of series 1, so yeah ... there's some mysterious somethings in the Archives that Ianto volunteers to go check out and there's lots of references to it as "Ianto's domain", so it sets everything up nicely for Cyberwoman. There's a couple of nice flirty Janto banters though:
J: "Ianto, you've anticipated my need for something warm and wet."
I: *rolls eyes* "Very amusing, sir. I should have guessed that, whatever I say, you'll always want to top me."
J: "You wish,"
J: "I'll take it in here"
There was also a nice bit before when Jack was talking to Gwen and he spotted Ianto and zoned out to watch him walk. All together now: awwwwwwwww.
I felt that most of the characters were quite OOC - I doubt that Toshiko would spend copious amounts of time refining a 3D social networking programme just to show off to Owen in a "Lookz wot I dun clevah me" kind of way. Gwen was clumsy and a bit lost, which I suppose she was at the beginning, but maybe not to this extent.
Anyways, if you're going to read this one, it's for the plot: It. Is. Brilliant. It has you guessing to the end, despite its length, and couple brilliant plot with equally good writing, and you've got a good book no matter how loose the characterizations were. The writing from different perspectives is used very effectively and you really don't click what's going on until the writer wants you to (well, apart from in one instance - but I am very clever).
There's a strange dream Gwen has of Jack in a swimming pool. Apparently, she has him down as a Speedos man. Personally, I don't think he'd like showing off his package enough to suffer a banana hammock. But whatever floats Peter Anghelides' boat ... or hammock. Oh! There's Tosh/Owen cuteness too - with Owen putting a picture of them together on the notice board and nagging at her to find the number for the Pizza place on it in the hope she'll notice. All together now: awwwww!
ooo and Ianto/Owen confrontation. Owen seemed to think that Ianto was a Valley's boy; Presbyterian and Chapel every Sunday, and therefore wouldn't like it if Owen was interested in men. We know better. All together now: heh heh heh heh *shifty eyes*
So yes: brilliant plot, excellent writer, lovely character exchanges - but some were quite OOC. I doubt Ianto would dress in a full body anti-bacterial suit then start randomly talking about his testicles in the middle of the boardroom for all to hear. *sigh*
I give this one an 8/10, because while everything is great, the typeface makes it hard going and the OOC-ness jars a little.
Ciao!

Ermm... yeah... even series 2 Ianto wouldn't do that. :P In the two books I've read (Twilight Streets and Almost Perfect), it seems like Ianto is the hardest voice for the writers to get.

Date: 2009-06-29 04:05 pm (UTC)I find few writers tend to have Ianto down, but I think I find characterization easier because I've spent so long studying methods of characterization and how to get into certain mindsets. Writers tend to invent their characters, so taking someone else's and running with it could be difficult for them, maybe?
I dunno. The later books have a very good Ianto. Apart from "Into the Silence". Technophobe who gets the pizzas? WHATEVAH!
