The New Torchwood Book Covers ...

Okay, so The Undertaker's Gift, Consequences and Risk Assessment are all due for release in the UK on the 1st of October, and I just went over to play.com to see if they'd released the cover images yet. Lo and behold! - what a kick in the teeth!

Ianto doesn't even get his own cover this time around! Why does this annoy me so much? - aside from the fact these books are supposedly Ianto's final outing in the Whoniverse and he doesn't even get his own cover? Talk about kicking a fictional construct when he's down!

... and they cropped out his gun ... THE GUN THAT HE NEVER FREAKIN' HAD!! ... come to think of it ... were any of you watching CoE thinking "Maybe he steals the gun from Johnson's men ... oh they're at an army base. Does he get his machine gun now? Okay the hand gun didn't burst the tank ... maybe he grabs his machine gun to do it ... WTF? He's dying and he didn't even get the big arse gun they've spent the past nine months drumming into us via publicity shots and photographs he's going to lay his hands on?" - anyone else, or just me?

*goes away to reminisce about Bay of the Dead and The Twilight Streets covers ... with a couple of passages from Pack Animals and Almost Perfect for good measure ...*

EDIT: Also ... in the bottom images of two of the books, Gwen is front and centre like she's the main character (something I've noticed on a couple of CoE promos). I thought Torchwood was Jack's series? Hmmmm

EDIT 2: Rile ye'selves! The original covers released in April had a Ianto cover!

I agree with everything you've just said - including the comment about John being a 'weak link' now. He must be worrying - the problem with not aging much in your mid-thirties to mid-forties is that it suddenly creeps up on you so fast that everyone notices. I think RTD made a little leeway for him, though - finding the grey hairs for example.

The main problem is, RTD doesn't seem to realise that Gwen isn't a strong enough character on her own to run the show. She needed the ensemble of Torchwood in able to carry her to the viewer.

The same really goes for Ianto - there isn't enough character there to hold a show on his own, but if Jack had a Ianto he'd never have left. A Jack and Ianto show would have been such a hit! That's what pisses me off! And so much potential! GAWD such a waste of a TV icon!

I'm getting angry about it now. I'll stop there o:-)

Talking about wasted potential? Not only they never bothered with Ianto, they never bothered with Jack either.

... that is actually very, very upsettingly true :(

Jack and Ianto's relationship going from caring to Jack being a total bastard.

This relationship - that means so much to straights as well as GBLTs - has suddenly become very one-sided and WTF??? Suddenly it's all Ianto pining after Jack??? Have you read nikki4noo's picspams? It's pretty clear, there, that Jack fell for Ianto first. The kiss in Cyberwoman is proof enough that Jack has been pining after Ianto since day one - not to mention his open reaction to liking him in "Fragments".

My thoughts exactly.

I've already posted along these same lines somewhere else. A relationship that started as "sexual harassment" :) when Ianto was totally in love with Lisa and Jack was totally wanting to get into his pants... and when Jack was actually showing that he cared! It's obvious from Cyberwoman that Jack was hurt by the betrayal and that he took it on a personal level. As it were there and obvious all those little unspoken moments between them, as [livejournal.com profile] nikki4noo beautifully pointed out. And anyway Jack always cared, for Ianto, for each and every one in his team, even for strangers.

Now we have the exact opposite. Ianto went from straight to gay just for Jack! Has no self respect because he is so desperately in love with a man who he knows consider him nothing more than a "part time shag" and is suffering from teenage gay angst!?... and Jack is a cold distant callous jerk who treats him like he is annoyed to death by his clinginess???

WTF have I been watching for the past 2 seasons!?

[identity profile] silverearthelf.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No she really is no Buffy. And she's no Rose either. I will be the first to admit that Rose had kinks, just like everyone does, but (at least to me) she was relatable. Rose never pissed me off in the way Gwen does.

The same goes for Buffy. Gwen just doesn't have it.

I completely agree with the emotional immaturity and least professional attitude. AND for all that she was 'important' at the police station- SHE was the tea girl at the station. Our first view of her was a meek, rather worthless (the barroom brawl anyone?), yet stubborn woman.

The whole "don't like couple" thing jarred with me. Jack has been married, ffs!! as if he has issues with commitment in that sense! Yes, he tries to keep Ianto at arms length - but he learnt (As we see in the books) that keeping his lovers at arms length hurts him more because of the LOST POTENTIAL.

And Ianto's "I hate it too" thing - no way would Ianto compromise his own likes and dislikes - his personality - to keep Jack happy! If either of them wanted them to be a couple, it was Jack!

*gah*

And suddenly Gwen was WonderGwen. I mean ... even ... gah ... just ... gah.

Incoherent "gah" ...

[identity profile] ella-caramella.livejournal.com 2009-08-14 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
WonderGwen: "Just leave it will you, this is high tech stuff!"
Andy: "Sorry, no. It's GPS."

LOL!

That's RTD for you. Sadly, he can only write one type of relationship, as [livejournal.com profile] tencrush said here:

http://tencrush.livejournal.com/201997.html

Oh, don't get me started on Jack's ability to commit. Like you said he was married. He was clearly still very fond of Estelle, to the extent that he kept in touch with her even after all those years.

He's being around for so much time and that is precisely why he should have the emotional maturity and being wise enough to know that keeping loved ones at arms lenght is not going to make things better. You'd guess he must have learned the lesson by now and act consequently to make his SO feel loved and cared for.

Otherwise we have a Jack who is a coward, afraid of having his little heart broken while at the same time is a stupid who does nothing to protect the one he loves.
According to RTD I should buy the theory that he was so afraid of losing Ianto, so very much afraid that he was trying not to get too attached and then he went and dragged him along in a death trap...

And I really don't know how certain people can drool at the idea of a manslut version of Jack. I mean, let's make him disgusting, why not!

One thing is making Jack a charming, flirting rogue, one is to make him a bastard with no feelings who treats people who love him like sexual objects. What the hell is supposed to mean that he cannot commit? So what the hell was he doing with Ianto? Taking advantage of his male, straight, vulnerable subordinate just to get a convenient shag???

And if he can't commit then don't give me that shit about him pining for Gwen!

I dread the possibility that if they're going on with Torchwood Jack is going to come back for Gwen. Just because I think what happened now in terms of angry fans backlash is nothing compared to what will happen in that case.

You got it! Maybe the baby could grow up to be a gay, Wiccan, liberal pacifist! And the Gwen (who is obviously now a card-carrying member of the NRA (National Rifle Assoc. for those of you not in the US)), can gun the baby down herself. Cause what every mommy needs is an automatic weapon!

Ianto was a blank

[identity profile] welshactorlover.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I seem to have missed the "Ianto was a blank" comment (which is probably good for my blood pressure!). Can you point me to the interview or whatever where RTD said this please, so that I can read it for myself?

I find myself thinking more and more "Come back, Chris Chibnall, all is forgiven!" At least he gave Ianto a better outing than RTD did.

I can't remember what interview it was in - I think it was linked in [livejournal.com profile] savecoffeeboy, but it was a while ago. Maybe google the phrase? Sorry I can't be more helpful x

Hmm, I've scrolled back through the comm and can only find the interviews I've seen already, and googling the phrase gets me:

Rusty added: “GROW UP! It’s a TV character!

“Granted, I was never that fond of Ianto to begin with – he was a blank as far as I’m concerned, but death threats?

“Come on, people!”

which seems to actually be a comment to the Wales Online article about the fan "overreaction" to Ianto's death. Is it RTD commenting, or just someone with the username "Rusty"?

Or have I found the wrong end of the stick entirely, and the phrase is from an actual interview with RTD? Just trying to get the facts, here.

[identity profile] welshactorlover.livejournal.com 2009-08-22 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
"I never liked Ianto anyway, he was always a blank..." thing that RTD said

I'm trying to track down where RTD said that. Can you point me in the right direction please? It seems a very odd thing for him to say when in all the other interviews I've read he has taken a different tack.

Re: Ianto was a blank

[identity profile] a-silver-story.livejournal.com 2009-08-22 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a quote, but all I know is what was said on [livejournal.com profile] savecoffeeboy. I try to avoid reading comments on external sites because of negativity - so there's the possibility it's either a quote, or I've seen that copied and pasted into the comm and thought it was an interview.

I know several people were complaining that "RTD said he was a blank" and stuff like that - so either it is a quote, or several of us have mistaken it for one.

Have you tried putting a post on the comm asking if anyone else knows where it is, or if it's just a case of misunderstanding?

Thanks, good suggestion. A job for next weekend when I next have some "spare" time.

Don't ask me a thing about the story. lol I was a bit distracted.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who that happened to :)
The same happens to me when I listen to the other audio books GDL has done as well. Voice porn, indeed :)
