SPOILER ALERT: "Slow Decay" by Andy Lane Review

A very brief look at "Slow Decay" by Andy Lane and what I thought about it.

CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THAT THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.

... and I think we all know how I feel about spoilers *folds arms and taps foot*

Slow Decay

This one took me forever to get through - and not just because of the length. I really had to force myself to read it. The plot is alright - at least ... I think it was ... I can remember frowning at the page a lot and going "That's a bit OOC ..." too.

The bit of OOC that really bothered me was obviously the inditement of Ianto's character towards the end of the book when he apparently can't tell when he's overfed and alien (because he'd not generally used to feeding things, is he?) - and then when it escapes he just shuts the door and waits for Owen to come back and then all sheepishly tells him what's happened and lets him go in first ... yah. I dunno ... I think that if something like that had happened, Ianto wouild have at least phoned somone, not hung about like a naughty child and waited for someone to get back. or tried to subdue the thing himself. He's not exactly wimpy ( no matter what Sarah Pinborough wrote in "Into the Silence").

Yeah. Hmm. I thought that Owen falling in love again was a bit much. (If we count these books as canon, that's three times in one series: Diane, Marianne and Megan Tegg. Sorry but I don't believe he loved Gwen).

The reason why this book is called slow decay is also a little confusing - everything decayed really fast, to be honest. I think it's supposed to highlight Toshiko's point at the end that the slow decay of growing old etc doesn't matter. But surely "Incredibly Speedy Decay - Oh My How Alarming!" would have made more sense as a title.

The plot was alright, but you kind of knew what was going on all the way through. Very predictable, I felt. It was dragged out too. I think this book may be the reason why the later novels were shortened to a considerably more readable length for one Torchwood story. It was dragged out so long, I totally forgot that Toshiko's sub plot had anything to do with this book.

Yeah ... I think there's a reason why Andy Lane was never asked to come back as a writer ...

So: I'm going to give it a 4/10

Too long, too dragged out and not enough to fill it out.

And OOC. Very OOC. I've forgotten the main OOC-ness (other than Ianto-OOC bit with the over-fed alien. ANNOYED ME!).

I realise this was an extremely negative review, but that's just how I feel about this book.
