Gareth may be right, but we're not supposed to need the actors explaining things to us after the fact. Point is, the Debenhams line and the line about the broken leg were inadequate to a serious effort at character development. They may have added some shading to the character, but they weren't sufficient to make a clear statement to the viewer. Obviusly, we don't want endless exposition, but I would argue that, in this case, whatever that line might add to our understanding of Ianto is overshadowed by our confusion.
